I chose iGoogle as my start page. I chose this one mainly because I already have an account for Google, so I wouldn't need to go through the agonizing process of creating an account. And I know that Google, is a very well known system that is one day going to rule the world, so might as well get a head start on my obedience.
I will not make it my permanent home page, just because I already have a homepage I like, and I can work with that. But it is really neat, and I can see it being used as a rocking homepage.

I didn't find and tools that would help with school/work really. But I found a lot of fun tools like, a hamster ( I recommend this one ), ebay, healthy tip of the day and so on. Which were all kinda neat.

The online calendars can be useful just because they can help you remember everything you need to do. Put a date of importance down and if you log onto your computer (assuming that it is your homepage) you will not forget about the event.

The to-do list is helpful because it, like the calendars will help you to get stuff done assuming you turn your computer on at least once a day.

I didn't try out backpack, mainly because I searched for it and I couldn't find it. And the one I found, 'backpack reminder' needed me to enter an API, to use... so yeah.
